Following the New England Patriots beating the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 in the AFC Championship game, there have been allegations that the Patriots had deflated balls that would have made holding, throwing and catching easier. It seems strange that each team is given their own set of balls to use which they are also allowed to look after because there will always be the possibility of allegations of cheating through tampering with the balls. My suggestions for ensuring that this doesn’t happen is either:
1. There is one set of balls for a game and they are used by both teams.
2. The officials, after inspecting the balls before kick-off, look after them.
If either of these were in place, I don’t think that there could be any allegations of cheating concerning the balls used.
