Book review: Imperial Sunset: The fall of Napoleon, 1813-14

Imperial Sunset: The fall of Napoleon, 1813-14 tracks the fall of Napoleon after his defeat in and retreat from Russia. The book tracks a number of battles through 1813 and 1814, with much of the focus being battles in the West, although Wellington’s campaign to remove France from Spain is not ignored. The book ends with Napoleon’s removal from power and journey to exile.

Napoleonic history is not an area of history I have read a lot about in the past and I enjoyed this book. I found out plenty of information and thought that it included enough detail to inform without becoming over-heavy and difficult to read. A key element in lots of the important engagements appears to have been luck. The book also shows the impact that the presence of Napoleon had upon his troops. I would recommend this book.
