Harry Kane to start against Italy?

After last night’s cameo role and Danny Welbeck pulling out through injury, there is no doubt that the pressure for Hodgson to start Kane against Italy is increasing further. But should he start?

England are in a weak group and currently top the table having won every game; regardless of what the squad may be saying, we will qualify and be in France next year (the expansion of the tournament to 24 teams made it incredibly likely before qualifying started and the current position makes it unthinkable that we will fail to qualify). The biggest tests we will face between now and then will be in friendly matches against other strong countries. If England want to win the European Championship, I believe we should be looking to put out what Hodgson would consider his strongest 11 in these games as far as possible and look to build the side up in games that will be a bigger test than qualifying games against weaker countries. Therefore, if Hodgson believes that come next summer that Kane will be leading the line for England, I think he should start; if not, I think he should be on the bench.
