Book review: We Fought Them In Gunboats

‘We Fought Them In Gunboats’ is the account of Lt. Com. Robert Hichens D.S.O, D.S.C, a gunboat commander during World War II. It details some battles he took part in and how his squadron actively looked for German ships, especially E-Boats, to attack. Hichens writes in a very reserved manner, never looking to over-dramatise the action he has been involved in. Hichens is quick to praise his crew and the captain’s of other ships and also writes about his reluctance to take an on-shore role, feeling that he would be of more use at sea, showing that he was devoted to his duty and fighting for Britain.
