The countries making up Group D are Croatia, Czech Republic, Spain and Turkey. Spain won their qualifying group, although they did suffer a shock loss to Slovakia and struggled at the last World Cup. Despite this, I expect them to win this group, although they do look short of striking in options; however, they do have an abundance of midfield options and could revert back to playing with a false nine. The rest of the group looks quite evenly matched and it is possible to make a case for any team finishing second, third or fourth. Croatia are blessed with having Modric and Rakitic pulling the strings in midfield for them, but the manager is unpopular and the fans are protesting. The Czech Republic have Petr Cech in goal, but didn’t keep a clean sheet in qualifying and look weaker up front than they have in the past. Turkey have Arda Turan, but struggled for goals in qualifying (14 in 10 games).
Predicted final table:
4. Czech Republic
